How to Locate Water Damage

Accidents happen, and when they do, you want to ensure that the damage doesn't get any worse. Water damage can occur as soon as several minutes after the water source has been disconnected or even after days have passed and everything seems dry. That's why it's important to learn how to locate this issue.

Here are a few simple steps you can take when trying to figure out if H2O has damaged a spot in your house.

Identify Faint Dampness

Are you finding random damp areas around your house? If you're seeing this annoying issue increasing, try to identify the source of the leak and turn off any electrical appliances or gas lines in the vicinity. It is important not to walk on wet surfaces, as this can lead to structural instability. Even if your carpet looks dry, it may be soaking up water from underneath and will need cleaning when all has dried out.

Check Wall Cracks

Surprisingly, one of the most common places you might find water damage is on your wall! Cracks in the drywall are often caused by water intrusion, and these cracks can be anywhere from one inch long to a foot or more. The most common way for water intrusion to happen is through a leaky roof, but it could also happen if someone leaves a window open during a rainstorm. Also, watch out for wallpaper that is peeling or bubbling, as well as loose paint on the walls.

Check Under Appliances

A common place that people don't usually think about is under their kitchen and bathroom appliances. After all, appliances like water heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines are full of water!

This can be caused by a leak or overflow that has gone unnoticed for some time. With the exception of dishwashers and washing machines, you should turn off the power to these appliances before looking at them so as not to risk electrocution.

Get a Professional

If you suspect there is water damage in your home, several factors will help you determine the severity of the problem. For example, mold growth should be examined and detected by a specialist as soon as possible because mold can present health risks and affect your home's structural integrity if left untreated.
