This year, hurricane season has already begun with a few named storms hitting land on the east coast. The National Hurricane Center predicts an above-average storm season this year, and we want to make sure you’re fully prepared until November. So, here are a few ways to start prepping for the big storms that may potentially hit us here on Long Island.
Create an Emergency Preparedness Kit
The best way to prepare for hurricane season is by having an emergency preparedness kit in your home and readily available. You should include food, water, medications, flashlights with extra batteries, first aid supplies, blankets or sleeping bags (depending on how long power will be out), pet care items such as leashes, and carriers if needed in your kit.
Pay Attention to Evacuation Orders
Long Island is surrounded by water, so many towns are in danger of some bad flooding throughout the island. If you’re in an area like this, pay attention to evacuation orders and be sure to leave if you’re told to do so. This is for your safety! Follow your local evacuation routes and rules.
Prevent Water Damage
Check your home to make sure it is well-sealed against water damage and debris. It could help if you update old roofing materials or trim trees that might fall onto power lines or houses during a storm. However, sometimes even with preventative measures, water damage can happen.
