1. Pay Attention to Your Gutters

Make sure that gutters and downspouts are clear of debris before rainstorms happen. Debris can clog up the drainage system, leading to water getting backed up into other parts of the house. They can especially get blocked up during spring, so when you see the weather forecast is predicting rain, be sure to get up there and clear things out.

 

2. Clean Up Standing Water

One of the worst consequences of heavy rains or flooding is standing water. Standing water can harbor all sorts of harmful organisms and bacteria, which means that you should take extra care to make sure your property is dry before anything else. If you see any standing water on your property after a storm or rainfall, be sure to clean it up as soon as possible. If you don't do this right away, there's a good chance that mold will grow in the wet area.

 

3. Seal Your Home Before

Be sure to seal cracks in floors and walls to keep moisture out, especially around doors and windows, before heavy downfalls come your way! To fill any cracks on the inside of your home, use caulking around doors and windows. You may also want to consider using silicone-based paint for flooring, as this will keep moisture out from below.
