Unexpected Ways You Are Making Your Indoor Air Quality Worse

You may think that your home is a safe haven from the pollutants in the air outside, but if you are not careful, you can unknowingly make your indoor air quality worse. From air fresheners to cleaning products, there are a number of seemingly harmless items and activities that can have a negative impact on the air quality inside your home.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the surprising ways you might be making your indoor air quality worse.

Air Fresheners

Air fresheners may seem like an easy way to make your home smell better, but they can also introduce harmful chemicals into your indoor air. Most commercial air fresheners contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). When breathed in, VOCs can cause health issues ranging from asthma and allergies to nausea and headaches. Instead of using chemical-filled products, try using natural alternatives like essential oils or simmering spices and herbs on the stovetop.

Cleaning Products

When it comes to cleaning products, many think stronger is better when it comes to getting rid of bacteria and germs, but this could not be further from the truth. Many cleaning products contain harsh chemicals that are toxic for both people and pets alike. These chemicals can cause long-term health issues including respiratory problems, skin irritation, eye irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea, and more. To limit exposure to these toxins opt for milder cleaners or all-natural DIY recipes instead.

Furniture & Carpeting

Having furniture and carpeting in your home adds character and comfort; however, those same pieces of furniture can trap dust particles and other allergens which will worsen the air quality in your home if they are not regularly cleaned and maintained. Vacuum carpets often as well as steam clean them yearly to remove any built-up dirt and dander that has accumulated over time. Furniture should also be vacuumed regularly with an upholstery attachment or have baking soda sprinkled onto them before being vacuumed up completely.

And don’t forget to get your air ducts cleaned!
